Taylor estimates that the publishing costs per article of the for-profit academic publisher Elsevier are about 12 times as high as those of open-access journals. Taylor also estimates that the revenue of Elsevier alone could fund open-access publishing of the world’s total scholarly output, and that the profit of Elsevier alone could fund open-access publishing of about half that output. Taylor concludes that for economic reasons alone (aside from moral arguments) continued use of for-profit academic journal publishing cannot be justified.
