(Shaneyfelt and Centor 2009) Reassessment of clinical practice guidelines

Shaneyfelt, Terrence M.; Centor, Robert M. Reassessment of clinical practice guidelines: go gently into that good night [editorial]. JAMA. 2009 Feb 25; 301(8):868–869.

Shaneyfelt and Centor criticize the process by which clinical guidelines for medical practice are developed on a number of grounds, but especially that of improper financial ties to industry on the part of guideline authors. The use of adherence to guidelines as a measure of the quality of medical care is also criticized. Shaneyfelt and Centor conclude that “Unless there is evidence of appropriate changes in the guideline process, clinicians and policy makers must reject calls for adherence to guidelines.”
