In a book that played a critical role in improving medical treatment of pain, Melzack and Wall recognize excessive and irrational concern with opioid addiction as a major obstacle to the adequate treatment of pain. On page 203, they write:
More nonsense on narcotic addiction is written by both doctors and the press than on any other medical matter. The undoubted occurrence of addiction has led to a mass hysteria about its danger which has been very harmful for patients as well as for addicts.
