In this classic novel, Sinclair Lewis portrays the establishment and further evolution of a fascist dictatorship in the USA, in a way that sheds light on how such a dictatorship might exhibit both similarities to, and differences from, the stereotypical Nazi and Italian Fascist models. The novel also illuminates the ways in which Americans might remain in denial as to the very possibility of a fascist regime in the USA even as it came into existence before their eyes.
