Engvall attacks the use of merit pay in higher education on the ground that it tends to undermine the autonomy and academic freedom of faculty by concentrating irresponsible power in the hands of administrators. Merit pay also tends to favor authoritarian, Taylorist, managerial corporate values over liberal academic values.
